Brahmaputra was one of the main rivers. The extinction of this region and the basin exists in Tibet, China, India and Bangladesh. It originates from Manas Sarobar Lake and from the middle of Kailash mountain range. The length of Brahmaputra is 2,850 kilometers from the origin. The river enters Bangladesh in the northeast of Kurigram district in Bhabanipur area. Then, about 12 kilometers of Bahadurabad Ghat, came from Harichandi of Fulchhari upazila of Gaibandha district and came to Jamalpur and Mymensingh in the Meghna river near Bhairab Bazar of Kishoreganj. This is now known as the old Brahmaputra.

Brahmaputra was once one of the important rivers of the country with huge streams. The Jamuna river, which is now known as Chanchala Branch, was also a branch of Brahmaputra. Basically there was no river named Jamuna before 1787. It was the Shinarka canal. Whose name is Janya or Jinua After the earthquake in 1787, the stream of Brahmaputra flowed near Dewanganj and flowed through the canal. This is today's Jamuna River. On the other hand, the main stream which falls in the Meghna by Jamalpur, Mymensingh, Kishoreganj district is the old Brahmaputra.

There is a mythological story about the greatness of Brahmaputra. In the Puranas, the son Parashuram made maternal uncle's death by ordering Mahamuni Jamdagni. The ax was stuck in his hand by the ax that killed his mother Reynka. He could not get out of the ax even after trying hard. Finally, he was immersed in deep sorrow and regret, and he began to roam the hills and mountains in the forests of meditation. Suddenly, when he heard Mahatthan of Brahmaputra, he went out of his search. Brahmaputra was then hiding in the Himalayas as a lake. He had been fluttering in the Himalayas for a long time on the unstoppable paths of the Himalayas, because of the evil eye of evil consequences of his eyes. He saw a lake stretched on the lower floor. Parshuram raised his hand with joy and said, "O God of the flame, your holy waters did not enter the earth. All your miraculous powers should be combined to wash away all my sins and end my penance. As soon as Parshuram jumped into the water, his hand ax ran away. He returned to the dual eye. He realized that his expiation was over. In order to reach the people of the holy water of Mahagunya, all the holy water, Parshuram, in his mind, threw his hand to his ax and driven it through the mountains. So that the trunk may be flowing in the Brahmaputra plains on the way. Thus, after a long time, the garland of Narayanganj district came to the tomb house. Parashuram realized that his purpose was successful. Then he fell down on the greatness of the river. But where the Brahmaputra stopped, the other side was flowing on the side of the beautifully beautiful Shitalakshya. The shape of the Shitalakshya was reached to the mighty Brahmaputra. To see Brahmaputra Sundari Shitalakkha, the two troughs were broken by the brunt of the troll, to the beautiful Shitalakshya. Fearful after seeing a huge bulge and strong Brahmaputra, Shitalakshya concealed her form and presented itself as an old man and presented herself as Buriganga. When Brahmaputra saw the nature of his appearance, he cried out loudly, 'O old woman, where is that youth Shitalakshya?' The veiled answer was soft in the language, I am the target. Brahmaputra quickly swirled and torn off his veil. Brahmaputra was fascinated by the target. There they are reconciled there. The water of Brahmaputra and the Sitalaksha mixed in a stream. The river Buriganga is carrying a stream of water. The water of the Brahmaputra is considered very sacred to Hindus. That is why all the sins are destroyed when bathing in the river on the day of the holy month of Chaitra.
